Exam Pattern

Conducting body: Staff Selection Commission (SSC). Posts: Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff — MTS — in various central government departments, and Havaldar in CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs) and CBN (Central Bureau of Narcotics). Eligibility: pass in Class 10 (Matriculation). Selection is through a single Computer-Based Examination (CBE); Havaldar posts additionally have a Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST).

The CBE has two sessions and BOTH are mandatory to attempt:

Session I (45 minutes, NO negative marking): Numerical and Mathematical Ability — 20 questions, 60 marks; Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving — 20 questions, 60 marks. (40 questions, 120 marks.)
Session II (45 minutes, negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer): General Awareness — 25 questions, 75 marks; English Language and Comprehension — 25 questions, 75 marks. (50 questions, 150 marks.)

For Havaldar (CBIC & CBN), candidates who qualify the CBE go through a PET/PST (walking / cycling standards and physical measurements) before document verification and medical.

Syllabus (topic-wise)

Numerical and Mathematical Ability (Session I): Integers & Whole Numbers, LCM & HCF, Decimals & Fractions, Ratio & Proportion, Percentage, Simplification, Averages, Simple Interest, Profit & Loss, Discount, Area & Perimeter of basic geometric figures, Distance-Time, Lines & Angles, and interpretation of simple Bar Graphs / Pie-charts / Histograms.
Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving (Session I): Analogies, Similarities & Differences, Space Visualisation, Problem Solving, Coding-Decoding, Relationship concepts, Non-verbal series, and simple pattern / order & ranking type questions.
General Awareness (Session II): environment around the candidate and its application to society; current events; India & its neighbouring countries — History, Culture, Geography, Economic scene, General Polity, the Constitution, Scientific Research, and Sports.
English Language and Comprehension (Session II): basics of English — vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms & antonyms, correct usage, spotting errors, fill in the blanks, and a short reading comprehension passage.
