SSC Junior Engineer (Civil, Mechanical & Electrical) is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission for JE posts in central organizations (CPWD, BRO, MES, Central Water Commission, Brahmaputra Board and more) — Group 'B' (Non-Gazetted), Pay Level-6 (₹35,400-1,12,400). Eligibility varies by post/organization: broadly a Degree OR a 3-year Diploma in the relevant engineering discipline (some posts, e.g. BRO, need 2 years' experience with the diploma route) — check the per-organization table in the notification. Age: generally up to 30 years (up to 32 for certain posts) with standard relaxations. Selection = two stages, and BOTH are objective computer-based tests — Paper-II is NOT descriptive under the current scheme. Paper-I: 200 questions/200 marks in 2 hours — General Intelligence & Reasoning 50/50, General Awareness 50/50, and your stream's General Engineering part 100/100; negative marking 0.25 per wrong answer. Paper-II: your engineering stream only, 100 questions/300 marks, 2 hours; negative marking 1 mark per wrong answer. Questions come in Hindi and English; engineering standard is approximately Diploma level; IS 456:2000 tables, steam tables and an on-screen scientific calculator are provided. Minimum qualifying marks: UR 30%, OBC/EWS 25%, others 20%. Fee ₹100 (women/SC/ST/PwBD/ESM exempt). Shortlisting for Paper-II is on normalized Paper-I marks; final merit = Paper-I + Paper-II combined (normalized). CONFIRMED against the official SSC Notice of Junior Engineer Examination, 2025 (F. No. HQ-C-3019/2/2025-C-3, published 30.06.2025 on ssc.gov.in).
सिलेबस (टॉपिक-वाइज़)

- Paper-I — General Intelligence & Reasoning (50 Q): analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization, problem-solving, judgment, decision-making, visual memory, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, number series, abstract ideas and symbols, arithmetical computations.
- Paper-I — General Awareness (50 Q): environment and society, current events, everyday science, India and neighbours — History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Polity, Scientific Research.
- Civil & Structural (Paper-I & II): Building Materials; Estimating, Costing and Valuation (rates analysis, bar bending schedule, Simpson's rule, depreciation); Surveying (chain to theodolite, levelling, contouring, curves); Soil Mechanics (index properties, permeability, consolidation, shear strength, bearing capacity, SPT); Hydraulics (Bernoulli, pipe and channel flow, pumps, turbines); Irrigation (duty-delta, Kennedy and Lacey, weirs, flood control); Transportation (geometric design, flexible/rigid pavements, railways, traffic safety); Environmental (water supply, sewerage, solid waste, air and noise pollution); Theory of Structures (BMD/SFD, columns, torsion); Concrete Technology and RCC Design (Limit State and Working Stress); Steel Design (columns, beams, trusses, plate girders).
- Electrical (Paper-I & II): basic concepts (R-L-C), circuit laws and network theorems, magnetic circuits, AC fundamentals (RMS, resonance, 3-phase), measurement and instruments (two-wattmeter, megger, CRO, CT/PT, AC bridges), DC machines, transformers (OC/SC tests, parallel operation), 3-phase induction motors, fractional-kW motors, synchronous machines, generation-transmission-distribution (load factors, power factor, tariffs, switchgear, protection, cables), estimation and costing (IE rules, earthing), utilization (illumination, heating, welding, drives), basic electronics (diodes, BJT, JFET).
- Mechanical (Paper-I & II): theory of machines and machine design (linkages, flywheels, gears, governors, cams, bearings), engineering mechanics and strength of materials (stress-strain, BMD/SFD, torsion, columns, pressure vessels), thermal engineering (steam tables, Mollier chart, 1st and 2nd law, Otto and Diesel cycles, IC engines, Rankine cycle, boilers, compressors, refrigeration, nozzles and turbines), fluid mechanics and machinery (viscosity, Bernoulli applications, flow measurement, hydraulic turbines, centrifugal pumps), production engineering (steels and heat treatment, welding processes and NDT, casting, forging, metal cutting, machining).
