Age relaxation by category
The upper age limit moves with your category. The table below is quoted as-is from the SSC official notice linked at the bottom — the same structure runs across most central-government recruitment. Relaxation applies to the UPPER limit only; the minimum age never moves.

PwBD relaxation stacks on top of the category relaxation — that is why PwBD (SC/ST) gets 15 years, not 10. Ex-servicemen are computed differently: military service is first deducted from actual age, and 3 years are added to that.
Only one date counts — the crucial date
Your age is not counted from the day you apply. Every recruitment fixes one date on which your age will be measured — the crucial date, or "as on" date, fixed under DoP&T OM No. 14017/70/87-Estt.(RR) dated 14-07-1988. Put THAT date into the calculator above, not today's.
A real example: SSC's 2026 Hindi Translator recruitment sets the limit at 18–30 years with a crucial date of 01-08-2026 — so candidates born before 02-08-1996 or after 01-08-2008 are not eligible. The same candidate can be eligible for one recruitment and not another purely because the two crucial dates differ.
Your date of birth comes from your Matriculation certificate
The Commission accepts only the date of birth recorded on your Matriculation/Secondary certificate and entered in your online form. No change is accepted after submission — under any circumstance. Check the date against the certificate itself before you submit, not after.
Common questions
Does relaxation apply to the minimum age too?
No. Relaxation applies only to the upper limit. The minimum age (usually 18) is the same for every category.
I am OBC — do I automatically get 3 years?
Only if you fall in the Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) and hold a valid NCL certificate in the format the Commission prescribes, valid on the crucial date. A plain caste certificate is not enough.
Can two relaxations be added together?
Generally no — you get one category's relaxation. PwBD is the exception: it stacks with the category, which is why the table above shows PwBD (OBC) at 13 and PwBD (SC/ST) at 15.
Does this same table apply to every recruitment?
The structure holds, but the numbers can change from one recruitment to the next — state commissions and banks especially. The official notice for that specific recruitment always has the last word.
