Two deadlines, not one — and missing the second ends the application

This recruitment has a two-step application, and the advertisement is explicit that both steps are compulsory. The online form closes on 4 September; the printed copy of that form, with documents and the Demand Draft, must physically reach the Registrar in Lucknow by 11 September.

An applicant who submits online and stops there has not applied. The Institute states that applications not received within the due date will not be entertained for any reason whatsoever — it names postal delay and wrongly addressed envelopes specifically.

Eligibility

Age limit: not more than 35 years (as on 04 September 2026). Relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC; PH candidates get relaxation as per Government of India rules. Educational qualification: the notification lists a qualifying degree, or one in an allied discipline of Earth Science, together with 3 years of relevant research experience — the exact wording of the first option is missing from our copy, so read that line in the official notification linked on this page before you apply. Desirable: preference for candidates with experience or publications in Palaeontology, Palaeobotany, Palaeogeography, Micropalaeontology, Palaeoceanography, Ancient DNA/metagenomics, Planetary Geosciences/Astrobiology, Geoarchaeology, Archaeobotany, Palaeoecology/Palaeoclimatology, Palynology, Geochemistry, dendrochronology, or AI/RS-GIS applications in Palaeosciences.

Selection Process

  1. All applications received within the due date are considered for short-listing by a Screening Committee.
  2. Only candidates recommended by the Screening Committee, after approval of the Competent Authority, are called for a personal interview.
  3. The Institute states that meeting the minimum qualification and experience does not by itself entitle a candidate to an interview call, and that its short-listing decision is final.

How to Apply

  1. Apply ONLINE only, through the Institute website www.bsip.res.in under “CAREER → BSIP RECRUITMENT PORTAL”. No other route is accepted.
  2. Complete the online application and pay the fee before 4 September 2026, 1700 hrs.
  3. Then print the submitted online application and post a HARD COPY — this step is separate and is what most applicants miss.
  4. With the hard copy enclose self-attested copies of mark sheets, certificates, degrees and testimonials, and the Demand Draft of Rs. 1,000 as uploaded in the online form.
  5. Super-scribe the envelope “APPLICATION FOR THE POST OF SCIENTIST ‘B’” and send it by Speed Post or Registered Post ONLY.
  6. It must REACH the Registrar, Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, 53 University Road, Lucknow 226 007, UP, on or before 11 September 2026 till 1730 hrs.
  7. The Institute states plainly that applications arriving after the closing date will not be entertained for any reason whatsoever — including postal delay or a wrongly addressed envelope.

Desirable specialisations — where preference is stated

Beyond the essential qualification, the advertisement names the fields in which experience earns preference. It is a long and specific list, and it is worth reading before deciding whether to apply — it describes the Institute's actual research programme.

  • Palaeontology (invertebrate and vertebrate), palaeobotany, palaeogeography, micropalaeontology and palaeoceanography
  • Ancient DNA and metagenomics
  • Planetary geosciences and astrobiology
  • Geoarchaeology and archaeobotany
  • Palaeoecology and palaeoclimatology
  • Palynology and geochemistry
  • Applied dendrochronology — integrating palaeoclimates, human dynamics and heritage studies
  • Advanced applications of artificial intelligence and RS-GIS in palaeosciences and earth sciences
What also countsAs stated
PublicationsExperience must be supported by publications of a high standard in national or international journals
Post-doctoral workPost-doctoral research experience is included in what earns preference

If you applied under the 2023 advertisement

The notification carries a note specifically for candidates who applied for Scientist ‘B’ under Advertisement No. BSIP/S&A/02/2023 dated 14.02.2023, and it cuts both ways.

What applies to youDetail
Your earlier applicationIt is still valid and will be considered
What you must still doYou are mandatorily required to fill and submit the online application form AGAIN through the Institute's portal within the deadline
FeeNo application fee is payable

What the advertisement does not say — and we will not invent

The notification is detailed about dates, fee and eligibility. Several things candidates ask about are simply not in it, and naming them is more useful than guessing.

  • Whether there is a written test. The document describes short-listing by a Screening Committee followed by a personal interview, and nothing else.
  • How the Screening Committee short-lists — no marks, weightage or cut-off is published.
  • The interview date, venue or mode.
  • Whether travel allowance is paid for the interview.
  • The exact number of posts that will finally be filled — the Institute states the number may vary and that it may decline to fill any post.
