Syllabus
BPSC TRE 4.0 now has two stages. The preliminary exam is one General Studies paper — 150 questions, 150 marks, two hours, with one-third of a mark cut for a wrong answer AND for a question left completely unmarked. The Main exam is a 150-mark paper in parts, and its 80-mark subject paper is where the recruitment is decided.

What changed in TRE 4.0 — and why a blank answer now costs you marks ↑
If you sat TRE 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0, do not carry the old rules into this one. Advertisement No. 14/2026 puts a Preliminary examination in front of the Main examination for the first time, and candidates who clear the prelims must submit a fresh, separate application for the Main.
The second change is in how the answer sheet is marked, and it is the one most likely to cost a well-prepared candidate. Every question carries five options, A to E. Option E means 'I am not answering this'. A wrong answer loses one-third of a mark — and so does leaving a question completely untouched. There is no free skip in this exam: if you do not want to answer, you must still mark E.

Preliminary exam — its structure and its marking, as the advertisement sets them out ↑
The preliminary exam is the same for every candidate, whatever level they applied for — no subject paper, only General Studies. Nine things about it are stated plainly in the advertisement, and they are set out one by one below.

Preliminary exam syllabus — the ten areas the advertisement names ↑
The advertisement gives the prelims syllabus as one sentence rather than a chapter list. Below, that sentence is broken into the areas it names, in the order it names them, with a plain-language note on each from us. Nothing has been added: if a topic you expect is not in this table, the advertisement does not name it.

Minimum qualifying marks — the same percentages at both stages ↑
The advertisement fixes the same category-wise minimum for the prelims and for the Main, citing Personnel & Administrative Reforms Department resolution 2374 dated 16.07.2007 and General Administration Department resolution 962 dated 22.01.2021.

Main exam — the four papers, their parts, and the document's own contradiction on duration ↑
The Main exam has a separate paper for each class level. All four carry 150 questions and 150 marks, but they are not built the same way: Paper 1 has two parts, the other three have three. The first table below lists the four papers; the second lists the parts that Papers 2, 3 and 4 share.

Paper 1 — primary school (Class 1-5): the eight subjects inside Part-II ↑
This is the only one of the four papers with two parts instead of three — Part-I 30 questions, Part-II 120. Eight subjects are named inside that Part-II, three more than the General Studies part of the other three papers carries. The three that appear here and nowhere else are marked in the table.

Paper 2 — middle school (Class 6-8): the Part-II areas and the six Part-III subject options ↑
From here the paper comes in three parts. The General Studies part is smaller than Paper 1's — five areas, not eight. In Part-III you choose one of six subjects, and each option below carries its own vacancy count at this level, so that the choice and its size are in front of you together.

Paper 4 — higher secondary (Class 11-12): the thirty-one Part-III subject options ↑
This is the largest level — 16,101 posts, very nearly half of the whole recruitment — and it has the longest subject list. The advertisement names thirty-one subjects, of which you choose one.
One thing only visible when the two lists are laid side by side: twenty-two of the thirty-one have a post count in the vacancy table and nine do not. Those nine are exactly the ones the note on page 4 sets aside for a supplementary requisition — Bangla, Bhojpuri, Magahi, Maithili, Pali, Prakrit, Arabic, Persian and Agriculture. 22 plus 9 is 31, so the two lists reconcile.

Social Science is the one subject that makes you choose again inside itself — and the choice runs one way only: what you pick in the first section decides what is left available in the second.

This is the section that decides which part of your effort actually counts. The small point most candidates miss: the language Part-I does not add to your total, yet it is what settles a tie.

Each level has its own teacher eligibility test, and its own academic and training qualification alongside. The advertisement lists several alternative routes per level; below is the main condition and the principal alternatives with it. One thing here is easy to miss on a quick read: the minimum age is measured on 1 August 2026 and the maximum age on 1 August 2024. One advertisement, two different cut-off dates. Check your date of birth against both.

How to use this page — this part is our own advice, not the document's ↑
Start by fixing your class level, because that decides your paper, your subject options and your age limit in one go. Then look at the post count against your subject in the tables above — of 16,101 higher-secondary posts, 3,695 are in Chemistry and 80 in Philosophy. That should be part of your thinking, even though the subject is tied to the eligibility test you passed.
Then work on the prelims, because it is the first door. Of its ten content areas, three are wholly about Bihar — Bihar's history, Bihar's geographical divisions and rivers, and the changes in Bihar's economy since independence — and a fourth, Bihar's contribution to the national movement, is half about Bihar. No national-level book covers that ground for you; it has to be studied separately.
Start practising the answer sheet today. Every question you are not answering needs an E. That habit takes time to build, and the exam hall is not the place to be thinking about it.
And do not treat Part-III as an afterthought. Of the 120 Main-exam marks that actually count towards your rank, 80 come from your own subject.
