UPSSSC Veterinary Pharmacist Syllabus and Exam Pattern

Syllabus

The UPSSSC Veterinary Pharmacist Main Exam under Advertisement No. 18-Exam/2026 is a single objective paper of 100 questions and 100 marks, written in two hours, split into three parts, with one quarter of a mark deducted for every wrong answer.

One paper, 100 questions, and a quarter-mark penalty ↑

The Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission published Advertisement No. 18-Exam/2026 on 14 August 2026, inviting applications for 308 Veterinary Pharmacist posts under the Directorate of Animal Husbandry. Paragraph 9 of that advertisement carries the examination scheme and the complete syllabus, and this page carries every entry in it.

The advertisement is on the Commission's own website, upsssc.gov.in, and it prints the whole syllabus twice — once in Hindi on its pages 9 to 13, and again in English on pages 13 to 17 of 32. Nothing on this page depends on our translation of a topic name, because the Commission supplied both versions itself.

The single most useful line in the advertisement is the one that says the basis of selection is the written examination. There is no interview and no skill test in this recruitment. The 100 marks set out below are the entire competition.

The scheme and syllabus were approved by the Uttar Pradesh Government, Personnel Section-3, letter number 485/47-ka-3-2026 dated 30 June 2026, which the advertisement cites when it prints them. The date of the examination itself is not in the advertisement; it says it will be intimated in due course.

What the paper isAs stated in the advertisement

Total marks100
Marks per question1
DurationTwo hours, printed as 120 minutes in the scheme table
Type of questionsObjective, multiple-choice
Negative marking25 percent, that is one quarter, of the marks prescribed for that question
Basis of selectionThe written examination. No interview, no skill test.

The three parts, and how the 100 marks are split ↑

The paper has three parts and they are not equal. Part-1 is the veterinary subject and it is most of the paper. Part-2 is computer and information technology. Part-3 is general information about Uttar Pradesh. All three are answered inside the same two hours; the advertisement sets no separate time for any part.

One number in the table below is ours, not the Commission's, and it is marked so. The advertisement prints a question count against each of the fifteen Part-1 topics, and it prints the grand total of 100, but it never prints a Part-1 subtotal. Adding the fifteen printed rows gives 65, which is consistent with the printed 15 for Part-2 and 20 for Part-3. If you ever quote a figure to anyone, quote the fifteen individual rows, because those are the ones actually printed.

PartWhat it coversQuestionsMarks
Part-1Subject related Knowledge — the fifteen veterinary topics listed below65 (derived: our sum of the fifteen printed rows, not printed by the Commission)65 (derived, same)
Part-2Knowledge of concepts of Computer and Information Technology, and contemporary technological development and innovation in this field1515
Part-3General information related to the state of Uttar Pradesh2020
TotalAs printed under the scheme table100100

Part-1: all fifteen topics, with the marks the Commission set against each ↑

This is the table that should decide your study plan, because the Commission has already weighted the subject for you. Each question carries one mark, so the question count and the mark count are the same number in every row.

Counting the rows above — and this count is ours, not printed — eight of the fifteen topics carry 5 marks each, four carry 4 marks each, and three carry 3 marks each. The eight heavier topics are livestock management, breeds and economic traits, nutrition and health, pharmacology, clinical veterinary medicine, veterinary clinical pharmacy, pharmacist jurisprudence, and farm management and extensions. If your time is short, that is the list to start from.

Notice what the weighting is telling you. Pharmacology, clinical pharmacy and jurisprudence together are worth more than anatomy and physiology together. This is a pharmacist's paper, not a veterinarian's.

Part-1 topics 1 to 5: the animal, and how it is kept ↑

The first five topics move from the body of the animal outward to the farm it lives on. Added up they come to 23 of the Part-1 marks — that sum is ours, like the 65 above, not a figure the Commission prints — and none of these five needs a laboratory to study.

The scope column below rewrites what the syllabus lists, in ordinary words. The wording is ours; the content is the Commission's, and every item in it appears in paragraph 9 of the advertisement.

Topic and marksScope, as the advertisement defines itWhat that means in practice
(1) Anatomy of Livestock and Poultry — 04 marksThe skeletal system, the major bones and the joints. The structural layout of the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems. The location of the uro-genital systems, the nervous systems, the sense organs and the superficial lymph nodes.Structure, not function. This topic asks where a part sits in the body, not what it does.
(2) Introduction to Livestock Management — 05 marksBasic terminology for managing cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, horses, camels and pigs. Animal housing designs and daily routine management such as grooming, washing, dipping and shearing. Handling pregnant animals, new born calf rearing, and methods such as dehorning or castration.Everyday farm work, named properly. The marks are in the vocabulary as much as in the practice.
(3) Introduction to Livestock Breeds and Economic Traits — 05 marksIdentification of popular native, exotic and crossbred livestock breeds. Basic systems of breeding, that is in-breeding as against cross-breeding. Maintaining essential livestock farm records, and farm economics.Breed names carry marks here, and so does the record register — the syllabus puts identification and farm economics in the same topic.
(4) Basics of Animal Nutrition and Health — 05 marksTypes of livestock feeds and fodders, and balanced ration formulation. Nutritional deficiencies, and the primary signs of poor health in farm animals.Ration formulation is the calculating half of this topic; deficiency signs are the observing half.
(5) Basics of Animal Physiology — 04 marksElementary knowledge of the physiological functions of the various organs of livestock and poultry. The companion to topic one. That topic asks where the organ is; this one asks what it does.

Part-1 topics 6 to 10: the laboratory, the drug and the disease ↑

These five topics are the clinical middle of the paper and come to 20 marks by our own addition of the printed rows. This is where a candidate who has only read a book, and never handled a sample or a syringe, starts losing marks.

Topic 10 needs one honest note. In the English printing on page 16 of the advertisement, its scope reads identification on the basis of grass physical examination physiological parameter and their method. The word grass is plainly a misprint for gross. The Hindi printing of the same topic, on page 12, is unambiguous: identification and examination methods on the basis of physical examination and physical signs. We have written the scope below from the Hindi, which is the clear version, and told you about the misprint rather than quietly tidying it away.

Topic and marksScope, as the advertisement defines itWhat that means in practice
(6) Basics of Clinical Pathology — 03 marksIntroduction to common laboratory tools and sterilization practices. Routine sample processing, including blood, urine and fecal analysis.A three-mark topic that is almost entirely bench work — the instruments and the three routine samples.
(7) Elementary Parasitology — 03 marksIdentification of common internal parasites, that is worms and flukes, and external parasites, that is ticks, mites and lice. Life cycles of parasites, and common deworming schedules.Learn the life cycles. A deworming schedule only makes sense once you know when the parasite is vulnerable.
(8) Fundamentals of Pharmacology — 05 marksBasic classification of veterinary medicines and their sources. Methods of drug administration, that is oral, injections and ointments. Basic concepts of drug dosage calculation, side effects and storage rules.Dosage calculation is the one part of this topic that is arithmetic under time pressure. Practise it as sums, not as reading.
(9) Clinical Biochemistry & Introduction to Gynaecology — 04 marksUnderstanding blood serum parameters. Elementary knowledge of livestock reproduction and pregnancy diagnosis assistance.Note the word assistance. The syllabus scopes this to what a pharmacist does beside the veterinarian, not to diagnosis itself.
(10) Basics of Clinical Veterinary Medicine — 05 marksBasic knowledge of different livestock and poultry diseases. Their identification on the basis of physical examination and physiological parameters, and the methods used. General principles of prevention and control of diseases. One of eight topics carrying five marks, and the one that ties the rest together — signs, identification, and then prevention.

Part-1 topics 11 to 15: the pharmacy bench and the hospital floor ↑

The last five topics are the job description turned into a syllabus, and they come to 22 marks by our own addition — more than any other block of five. Compounding, dispensing, inventory, surgical assistance, law, extension work and polyclinic practice.

If you have worked in a veterinary pharmacy, this is the block where your experience is worth marks. If you have not, read these five as a description of a working day rather than as chapters.

Topic and marksScope, as the advertisement defines itWhat that means in practice
(11) Veterinary Clinical Pharmacy — 05 marksCompounding techniques: preparing mixtures, lotions, ointments, powders and tinctures. Dispensing science: labelling, reading prescriptions correctly, and packing medicines. Inventory control: cold-chain management for vaccines, tracking expiry dates, and narcotic drug registers. This is the job itself, written down as a syllabus topic. The three headings — compounding, dispensing, inventory — are worth memorising as three headings.
(12) Preliminary Surgical Procedures — 04 marksIntroduction to surgical instruments, sterilization and autoclave operations. Preparing the animal for surgery, that is shaving and antiseptic cleaning. Wound dressing, bandaging, post-operative animal monitoring and suture care. The pharmacist's side of the operating table: instruments, preparation, and everything that happens after the surgeon has finished.
(13) Pharmacist Jurisprudence — 05 marksLaws governing the sale, storage and distribution of animal medicines in India. Ethics of a veterinary pharmacy practitioner.Five marks for law and ethics. The advertisement does not name the statutes, so do not trust a coaching list that claims it does.
(14) Farm Management & Extensions — 05 marksMaintaining daily hygiene and bio-security on a dairy or poultry farm. Communicating basic health practices to farmers, and helping organize animal health camps.Half of this topic is bio-security and half is talking to farmers. The second half is easy to skip and it carries marks.
(15) Hospital Practice Training — 03 marksComplete hands-on training inside a veterinary polyclinic setup. Handling emergency cases, assisting veterinarians during physical exams, and managing incoming pharmacy stock.Three marks that reward anyone who has actually stood in a polyclinic. If you have not, read it as a description of a working day.

Part-2: Computer and Information Technology, 15 marks, the full list ↑

Part-2 carries 15 questions for 15 marks. The advertisement prints it as five items, the second of which opens into eight sub-items. There is no mark against any individual item — only the part total of 15 — so anyone showing you a topic-wise breakdown of Part-2 has made it up.

This is the same computer syllabus the Commission uses across its recruitments, and it is shallow on purpose. It asks whether you can use a computer and name its parts, not whether you can program one.

  • Digital Financial Tools and Applications.
  • Future Skills and Cyber Security.
  • Technological Development and Innovation in the field of Computer and Information Technology — Artificial Intelligence, Big Data Processing, Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Internet of Things — and India's achievements in this field.

Part-3: General information related to Uttar Pradesh, 20 marks ↑

Part-3 carries 20 questions for 20 marks — a fifth of the paper, and the part most candidates under-prepare because it looks like general knowledge. It is not general knowledge. Every subject named below is specifically about Uttar Pradesh.

The advertisement names 24 subjects in one sentence and closes with the word etcetera, so the list is indicative rather than closed. Here they are, separated out.

How you reached this paper: PET-2025, and the 15-times shortlist ↑

This is a Main Exam. Only candidates who sat the Preliminary Eligibility Test 2025 and hold its score card may apply, and shortlisting for the written examination is done on the normalised PET-2025 score, in order of merit.

The advertisement is specific about how many are called. Category-wise, candidates numbering 15 times the posts advertised are shortlisted for the written examination, and everyone holding the normalised score at the last cut-off — measured to 02 decimal places — is included, so the actual number called can exceed that.

Two limits are worth knowing before you count on a call letter. A candidate whose absolute or normalised PET-2025 score is zero, less than zero, or negative is not shortlisted at all. And candidates marked Under Investigation or Provisional in the PET-2025 result may apply provisionally, but their shortlisting and selection stay subject to the outcome of the Commission's own inquiry.

If the written examination runs across more than one shift or day, the advertisement states that scores will be normalised for comparative evaluation under the provisions of Essential Information No. 42/05/Vigya Anu (Eleven)/2019, published on 22 May 2019.

Who may sit this examination, and what it costs ↑

The qualification is set by Part-4 Rule-8 of the Uttar Pradesh Animal Husbandry Department Veterinary Pharmacist Service Rules, 2025. A candidate needs High School and the Intermediate examination with Biology from the Board of High School and Intermediate Education Uttar Pradesh, or an examination recognised as equivalent by the Government; a diploma of 02 years 03 months in Veterinary Pharmacy from a university or institution established by law in India; and knowledge of Hindi in Devanagari script.

The Rules also require registration with the competent council or institute, if available. The advertisement then records, citing the Additional Chief Secretary, Animal Husbandry Section-3 letter dated 20 May 2026, that no Veterinary Pharmacy Council presently exists in Uttar Pradesh for registering veterinary pharmacists — so registration is not required. That single sentence has confused a lot of candidates; it is in the advertisement in plain terms.

Age is governed by Rule-10 of the same Rules: the candidate must have attained 18 years and must not have attained more than 40 years on the first of July of the calendar year in which the vacancies are advertised. The upper limit is higher by as many years as specified for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other categories notified by the Government.

Preference in direct recruitment, other things being equal, goes to a candidate who has served at least two years in the Territorial Army, or who holds a 'B' certificate of the National Cadet Corps.

The fee is the same for every category. There is no application fee at all; only an online process fee of 25.00 rupees is charged. Dependants of freedom fighters, ex-servicemen, women, persons with disabilities and outstanding sportspersons pay the fee of their own original category, which is the same 25.00 rupees.

What this advertisement does not tell you — and we will not invent ↑

A syllabus paragraph defines scope. It does not answer every question a candidate has, and the honest thing is to name the gaps instead of filling them with a confident guess.

For each of the following, the advertisement itself and upsssc.gov.in are the only sources worth trusting.

  • The examination date. The advertisement says only that the date of the examination will be intimated in due course.
  • Any topic-wise breakdown inside Part-2 or Part-3. Only the part totals of 15 and 20 are printed. The individual items carry no marks of their own, and any table that gives them marks is somebody's estimate.
  • A Part-1 subtotal. The fifteen topic rows are printed and the grand total of 100 is printed. The 65 in between is our own addition, and we have said so wherever it appears.
  • Any cut-off. Neither the PET-2025 shortlisting cut-off nor the final selection cut-off is in the advertisement; both depend on vacancies and on how candidates actually perform, and are published afterwards.
  • Any book list. The Commission prescribes a syllabus, not textbooks. A topic list is not a reading list.
  • The medium of the question paper. Paragraph 9, which carries the scheme and the syllabus, does not state in which language or languages the questions will be set.
  • Which statutes Pharmacist Jurisprudence covers. The syllabus says laws governing the sale, storage and distribution of animal medicines in India, and names no Act.
