The exam pattern, as the official notification states it
Selection for the Telangana Police Constable posts runs in three main stages — the Preliminary Written Test, then the Physical Measurement and Efficiency Tests for those who clear it, and then the Final Written Examination. Understand one thing before you start: in the PWT, a wrong answer costs 20% of that question's full marks, so an answer filled in blindly does you direct damage.
The qualifying bar is not the same for everyone — 30% for OC including EWS, 25% for BC, and 20% for SC/ST/Ex-Servicemen/Home Guards. Set your target against your own category's number, not somebody else's.
| Preliminary Written Test | As stated in the notification |
|---|---|
| Papers | One paper |
| Duration | Three hours |
| Questions | 200 |
| Marks | 200 |
| Type | Objective; answered on an OMR sheet in blue or black ball point pen only |
| Negative marking | 20% of that question's full marks for a wrong answer; zero marks for an unattempted question |
| Qualifying marks | 30% for OC including EWS · 25% for BC · 20% for SC/ST/Ex-Servicemen/Home Guards |
| Question paper languages | English-Telugu and English-Urdu; English-language questions are set in English in every version |

The three stages, in order
| What the syllabus lists | What it means and how to prepare |
|---|---|
| A) Preliminary Written Test (PWT) — all eligible registered candidates | The first stage, which everyone sits. Three hours, 200 questions, 200 marks. The hall ticket is issued online. |
| B) Physical Measurement Test and Physical Efficiency Test — for those who qualify the PWT | Physical measurement and efficiency tests for those who clear the PWT. The standards are in the separate table below. |
| C) Final Written Examination | The final written examination — the personality test is added here; the other subjects stay the same. |
| Note in the notification: PMT/PET conducted once within three months counts for every TSLPRB post applied for | The notification states that the PMT/PET is conducted only once for all TSLPRB posts you have applied for within a three-month period, and the same readings and scores count for all of them. |
Annexure-II — Preliminary Written Test syllabus (Intermediate standard, objective, 200 questions)
The notification sets this paper at Intermediate standard and names eight subjects. Note what that is — a list of SUBJECTS, not topics; the board publishes no topic-wise breakdown.
| What the syllabus lists | What it means and how to prepare |
|---|---|
| 1. English | English — grammar, vocabulary and comprehension. One point worth noting: the notification states that English-language questions stay in English even in the Telugu and Urdu versions of the paper, so they are not translated. |
| 2. Arithmetic | Arithmetic — percentage, ratio, average, interest, time and work, and mensuration. Set at Intermediate standard, so the school textbook is the foundation. |
| 3. General Science | General science — the basics of physics, chemistry and biology, and how they show up in daily life. |
| 4. History of India, Indian culture, Indian National Movement | Indian history, culture and the national movement — ancient to modern; learn the freedom-struggle leaders and events by name. |
| 5. Principles of Geography, Indian Geography, Polity and Economy | The principles of geography, Indian geography, polity and economy — four subjects inside one line, so treat it as the largest block. |
| 6. Current events of national and international importance | Current events of national and international importance — the daily newspaper is the real preparation; this cannot be crammed. |
| 7. Test of Reasoning / Mental Ability | Reasoning and mental ability — series, coding, direction, relations, Venn diagrams. It comes from solving daily, not from reading. |
| 8. Contents pertaining to the State of Telangana | Content pertaining to the State of Telangana — its history, geography, movements, schemes and culture. This is the portion national-level books will not cover, and it is where local candidates pull ahead. |
Annexure-III — Final Written Examination syllabus (Intermediate standard, objective, 200 questions)
The Final Written Examination repeats the PWT subjects and adds one more — the personality test. That single addition is the real difference between the two papers.
| What the syllabus lists | What it means and how to prepare |
|---|---|
| 1-7 and 9. Same subjects as the Preliminary Written Test | English, arithmetic, general science, history/culture/national movement, geography/polity/economy, current events, reasoning, and Telangana content — all the same. |
| 8. Personality test — Ethics, Sensitivity to Gender and weaker sections, social awareness, Emotional Intelligence | Personality test — ethics, sensitivity to gender and to weaker sections, social awareness, and emotional intelligence. Not a memorisation subject: it asks what the right conduct is in police work. It appears only in the final examination. |

What the official document does not state
The items below are what a candidate would normally want, and the official document does not state them. We do not fill them in by guesswork — a study plan built on a wrong figure damages the person who made it.
| Not stated | Status |
|---|---|
| A topic-wise syllabus | The notification names eight subjects (nine for the final examination) and no topics. We have not manufactured a topic list. |
| A prescribed textbook | The notification states plainly that the board prescribes no particular textbook or publication and is not bound by the material in any book. |
| The exam date | The date is not in the syllabus portion of this notification; it is announced separately. |
| The cut-off | Qualifying marks are given (30%/25%/20%), but the final selection cut-off is settled only after the exam. |
How to use this
This part is not from the official document; it is our own advice.
- Fix your own category's qualifying bar first — 30% OC/EWS, 25% BC, 20% SC/ST/Ex-Servicemen/Home Guards.
- Keep the negative marking in mind: a wrong answer costs 20% of that question's marks, a blank costs nothing. Skip what you are not sure of.
- Study the Telangana-specific content separately — it is the portion national books do not cover.
- Start running practice today, alongside the written preparation; 1600 m in 7:15 and 800 m in 5:20 take training.
- Do not leave the final exam's personality test to chance — it appears only at that stage and cannot be memorised.
