RRB Group D is a single CBT — 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes. The PET after it is qualifying only and its result does not enter the merit list. So the entire job rests on those 90 minutes — and the largest share of them is reasoning, not mathematics.

Two facts that should change your plan: (1) a third of a mark is deducted for every wrong answer, so a guessed answer costs you — leaving it blank is better; (2) reasoning carries 30 questions, more than any other section. Candidates who start with maths out of fear often reach the biggest section last.

1 General Intelligence & Reasoning 30 Q

The largest section — 30 questions. Not a memorisation subject but a daily-practice one; a month of daily solving raises your score faster here than anywhere else.

Mathematical Operations	Mathematical operations — solving with substituted symbols; BODMAS order still applies.

Statement–Arguments and Statement–Assumptions	Statement-arguments and statement-assumptions — stay strictly inside what the statement says and add nothing of your own. This is the commonest mistake.

2 General Science 25 Q

Physics, chemistry and life sciences up to class 10 (CBSE) level — and no further. The class 9 and 10 NCERT books are the entire course.

Physics (up to 10th standard, CBSE)	Physics — motion, force, work and energy, light, sound, electricity and magnetism. Understanding is asked for more often than formulae.
Chemistry (up to 10th standard, CBSE)	Chemistry — the nature of matter, atoms, the periodic table, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, and chemical reactions.
Life Sciences / Biology (up to 10th standard, CBSE)	Life sciences — the cell, life processes, nutrition, control and coordination, heredity and environment.

3 Mathematics 25 Q

The whole section is class-10 level. Speed inside 90 minutes matters more than memorising formulae.

Number System; BODMAS; Decimals; Fractions; Square Roots	Number system, BODMAS, decimals, fractions and square roots — the foundation; weakness here shows up in every other topic.
LCM and HCF	LCM and HCF — used in the practical questions about bells, tiles and laps.
Ratio and Proportion; Percentage	Ratio, proportion and percentage — the root of profit and loss, interest and data questions alike. Fix this first.
Mensuration	Mensuration — area, perimeter, volume. With the formulae memorised these are the fastest marks on the paper.
Time and Work; Time and Distance; Pipes and Cistern	Time and work, time and distance, pipes and cisterns — all three run on one idea: how much gets done per unit of time. Study them together.
Simple and Compound Interest; Profit and Loss	Simple and compound interest, profit and loss — percentage applied directly; less formula, more reasoning.
Algebra; Geometry and Trigonometry	Algebra, geometry and trigonometry up to class 10; in trigonometry keep the standard-angle table (0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°) memorised.
Elementary Statistics	Elementary statistics — mean, median, mode and simple graphs.
Age Calculations; Calendar and Clock	Age, calendar and clock — small but reliable marks; for calendars, learn the odd-days method.

4 General Awareness & Current Affairs 20 Q

20 questions — not a section you can read in one sitting. Fifteen minutes of newspaper a day is the entire method.

Sports	Sports — major tournaments, winners, host nations and records.
Culture; Personalities	Culture and personalities — awards, appointments and achievements.

Politics	Politics — constitutional basics, elections and government decisions.
Any other subject of national and international importance	Any other subject of national or international importance — the syllabus deliberately leaves this open, so the daily news is your only real cover.

5 Selection stages, marking and qualifying marks

What the syllabus lists	What it means and how to prepare
Stage 1 — Computer Based Test (CBT)	The only stage whose marks build the merit list. 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes. This is where all the preparation goes.
Stage 2 — Physical Efficiency Test (PET), qualifying only	Pass or fail only — the result does not enter the merit list. Each candidate gets one chance.
Stage 3 — Document Verification (DV), Stage 4 — Medical Examination (ME)	Document verification and medical examination — these confirm rather than select. Keep your documents complete in advance.
Marking: +1 for a correct answer; 1/3 (0.33) mark deducted for a wrong answer; nothing deducted for an unattempted question	+1 for right, −0.33 for wrong, nothing for blank. Three wrong answers wipe out one right answer — guessing is expensive.
Minimum qualifying marks: UR & EWS 40%; OBC (non-creamy-layer), SC and ST 30% (relaxable up to 2% in some cases for shortage of PwBD candidates)	Minimum qualifying marks — 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for OBC (NCL), SC and ST, relaxable by up to 2% in some cases where PwBD candidates fall short.
