The paper is subjective, not multiple choice ↑
This is the fact to absorb before anything else on this page. The Haryana Public Service Commission's announcement states plainly that the paper will be subjective type — you write answers, you do not shade bubbles.
That changes preparation completely. Recognising the right option among four is a different skill from producing a derivation, a sketch and a written justification under time. Candidates who prepare from objective question banks alone are practising the wrong exam.

How the selection actually works — the three rules that decide it ↑
The announcement sets out the selection arithmetic in full, and it is unusually specific. Read these three rules together, because each one can end a candidacy on its own.
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| A minimum of 35% marks in the test is required before any candidate is called for interview | There is a hard floor. On 150 marks that is roughly 53 marks. Clear it or the interview does not happen, however strong the rest of your profile. |
| The number called for interview will be two times the number of advertised posts, including bracketed candidates | Even above 35%, only about twice the posts go through. The floor is the qualifier; the shortlist is the real competition. |
| The test carries 87.5% weightage and the interview 12.5%; the final merit list adds the two | Seven-eighths of the final merit is decided in the written paper. The interview can adjust your position; it cannot rescue a weak paper. |
| Attendance at every stage of exam is mandatory | Missing a stage ends the candidature — this is stated explicitly in the announcement. |

Geotechnical Engineering — every topic listed ↑
Two entries, both dense. Foundation Engineering in particular is written out in unusual detail in the official document, which is a signal about how thoroughly it is examined.
| What the syllabus lists | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Soil Mechanics | Three-phase system and phase relationships; index properties; Unified and Indian standard soil classification; permeability and one-dimensional flow; seepage through soils, two-dimensional flow, flow nets, uplift pressure, piping, capillarity, seepage force; principle of effective stress and quicksand condition; compaction of soils; one-dimensional consolidation and time rate of consolidation; shear strength, Mohr's circle, effective and total shear strength parameters; stress-strain characteristics of clays and sands; stress paths. |

Water Resources Engineering — every topic listed ↑
Four entries running from fluid fundamentals through to irrigation structures.
| What the syllabus lists | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Fluid Mechanics | Properties of fluids; fluid statics; continuity, momentum and energy equations and their applications; potential flow; laminar and turbulent flow; flow in pipes and pipe networks; concept of the boundary layer and its growth; concept of lift and drag. |
| Hydraulics | Forces on immersed bodies; flow measurement in channels and pipes; dimensional analysis and hydraulic similitude; channel hydraulics — energy-depth relationships, specific energy, critical flow, hydraulic jump, uniform flow, gradually varied flow and water surface profiles. |
| Hydrology | Hydrologic cycle; precipitation, evaporation, evapo-transpiration; watershed; infiltration; unit hydrographs and hydrograph analysis; reservoir capacity; flood estimation and routing; surface run-off models; groundwater hydrology — steady state well hydraulics and aquifers; application of Darcy's law. |
| Irrigation | Types of irrigation systems and methods; crop water requirements — duty, delta, evapo-transpiration; gravity dams and spillways; lined and unlined canals; design of weirs on permeable foundations; cross drainage structures. |
Environmental Engineering — every topic listed ↑
Three entries covering water and wastewater, air, and solid waste.

| Traffic Engineering | Traffic studies on flow and speed; peak hour factor; accident study; statistical analysis of traffic data; microscopic and macroscopic parameters of traffic flow and their fundamental relationships; traffic signs; signal design by Webster's method; types of intersections; highway capacity. |
Geomatics Engineering — every topic listed ↑
The shortest of the six branches, and for that reason the one most worth finishing completely — the marks per hour of study are high.
| What the syllabus lists | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Surveying | Principles of surveying; errors and their adjustment; maps, scale and coordinate systems; distance and angle measurement; levelling and trigonometric levelling; traversing and triangulation survey; total station; horizontal and vertical curves. |

What the announcement does not say — and we will not invent ↑
The announcement is precise about the pattern and complete about the topics. It is silent on several things candidates want to know, and the honest answer is to name them rather than fill them in.
- The number of questions in the paper. Total marks are 150 and the paper is subjective; how those marks are divided is not stated.
- Whether there is any internal choice between questions.
- How the 150 marks are distributed across the six branches. Nothing in the document weights one branch above another.
- Whether the 35% qualifying mark is relaxed for reserved categories.
- The exam centre and reporting time.
- Any book list — the Commission prescribes a syllabus, not textbooks.
| Detail | Where the answer actually is |
|---|---|
| Question count, internal choice, branch-wise weighting | Not published. Treat all six branches as examinable in full. |
| Centre, reporting time, admit card | The HPSC website — the announcement fixed the date as 27.09.2026, and any change will be published there, not here. |
| Category relaxation on the 35% floor | The original advertisements — No. 8/2026 and No. 9/2026 — rather than this announcement. |
How to prepare for a subjective paper — a practical order of work ↑
This last section is not from the official document. It is our own advice, and should be read as such.
- Write full answers from the start. The single biggest mistake available here is preparing with objective question banks for a paper that asks you to write.
- Practise against the clock. Three hours for 150 subjective marks is roughly one mark per minute-and-a-bit, including the time to draw diagrams.
- Treat all six branches as examinable. No branch-wise weighting is published, so leaving one out is a gamble on information nobody has.
- Finish Geomatics early. It is the shortest branch in the syllabus and the fastest to complete, which banks marks while the longer branches are still in progress.
- Give Foundation Engineering the time its length suggests. The Commission wrote that one entry out in far more detail than any other, and detail in a syllabus is usually a signal.
- Learn to sketch cleanly and quickly — flow nets, pressure bulbs, hydrographs, stress transformations. In a subjective paper a correct diagram earns marks that a correct sentence does not.
- Quote the code where a code governs the answer, particularly for pavement design under IRC codes and for limit state design.
- Aim well above 35%, not at it. The floor only qualifies you; the shortlist is twice the posts, and 87.5% of the final merit rides on this one paper.
